We live in amazing times, where once-incurable diseases are on the cusp of eradication — if only there were sufficient funding and advocacy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a rare disease that primarily strikes young boys. Jett Foundation founder Christine McSherry (whose son Jett suffers from the disease) is on a mission to help fund a cure and provide aid programs for those who live with DMD.

Full disclosure — I had the pleasure of meeting Christine (and her son) when we were Charity Warriors contestants during the competition’s inaugural season.

McSherry and a handful of VIP friends are making it easy to help their cause. On Monday, March 7, local star chefs will whip up delicious treats at Yale Appliance’s Boston location (296 Freeport St., Dorchester) at Cook for a Cause to benefit The Jett Foundation.

The event will offer sample light bites, paired wines, and delicious desserts from the likes of Yvonne’s Tom Berry and Juan Pedrosa, Paul Wahlberg of Wahlburgers and Alma Nove and Adam Kube of Bastille Kitchen as Jenny Johnson of NESN’s “Dining Playbook” emcees the culinary evening.

“We are in a very important time in the history of Duchenne,” McSherry said.

“For the first time ever, there is real proof that there is a drug that could stop Duchenne in its tracks; however, it is expensive to promote advocacy, and we need all the help we can get.”

Tickets are $100 and available

Go tell ya’ mother: Wahlburgers opens downtown, VIP event details released

Wahlburgers, the celebrity burger joint, is open after a short delay and is readying for a VIP party Thursday featuring at least two of the famous brothers.

The restaurant at 200 S. Orange Ave. started serving a few customers over the weekend, bringing the Boston-based fast-casual burger concept to downtown Orlando.

The official opening comes days ahead of a VIP event where actor Mark Wahlberg and chef Paul Wahlberg are confirmed to attend. Donnie Wahlberg, star of Blue Bloods and the former New Kids on the Block member, is still waiting to see if he is able to attend.

The private invitation VIP event at Wahlburgers will coincide with a public concert event from 7 p.m. to midnight. The concert event will close Church Street to traffic nearly the entire day Thursday.

Gina Buell, the franchisee for Wahlburgers Orlando, said Paul and Mark Wahlberg are expected to make appearances at the public event.

Wahlburgers’ new 6,000-square-foot location is in the SunTrust Building in downtown Orlando, at the corner of Church Street and Orange Ave.

The Wahlberg brothers are looking to raise $10 million from investors to expand their Wahlburgers restaurant chain in Massachusetts and have signed a lease for a location in their hometown of Dorchester.

“Because they’re doing so well, that’s the impetus to raise more capital to expand within Massachusetts — that means … within the I-95 belt and even beyond,” said Lori Moretti, spokeswoman for the Hingham-based company.

Wahlburgers Boston Developer Co. LLC — led by actor and producer Mark, actor and New Kid on the Block Donnie and Paul, a chef — already has raised $1.36 million toward the $10 million goal, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The Wahlberg clan and their burger chain of six restaurants are featured in the A&E TV network’s “Wahlburgers” reality show that starts another season March 9.

The Dorchester Wahlburgers will be a 5,000-square-foot restaurant in South Bay Town Center, the proposed mixed-use development that would be adjacent to South Bay Center and is under city review.

“What is special about the store, of course, is that the Wahlberg brothers are just thrilled to have a Wahlburgers in their hometown,” Moretti said.

There are now three Wahlburgers in Massachusetts: the original that opened in Hingham in 2011 and locations in Boston’s Fenway and Lynnfield. An opening in Terminal C at Logan International Airport, under an agreement with SSP America, is set for this spring. Wahlburgers also will debut in Orlando on Feb. 18 and Philadelphia this spring. Another, in Las Vegas’ Grand Bazaar Shops, is under development.

Boston-based burger chain Wahlburgers has raised $1.36 million in equity funding out of a $10 million goal as it plans to expand across the Bay State.
Seven investors have contributed funding so far, according to a regulatory filing. The filing for Wahlburgers Boston Developer Co. LLC was issued on Feb. 9 and lists local celebrity brothers Paul, Donnie and Mark Wahlberg as directors of the company.

The chain first launched in Hingham in October 2011 and has since opened locations in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood and at the MarketStreet lifestyle retail center in Lynnfield. A location at the Boston Logan International Airport is also in the works.

“We’re very pleased with the performance of the Boston-area stores so far,” Wahlburgers CEO Rick Vanzura told the Boston Business Journal Tuesday. “The same group that’s invested in Lynnfield and Fenway is going forward — obviously with heavy support from the Wahlberg family — with a deal to develop the rest of the state of Massachusetts.”

Vanzura told Business Insider in December that the chain is planning to add up to 150 locations during the next five years to keep up with competition from chains including Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE: SHAK) and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Wahlburgers is planning a Washington, D.C. store and also has locations in Florida, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Canada. In May, Wahlburgers inked a 20-store franchise deal with Arjomand Group to expand across the Middle East.

The reality television series that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the chain — aptly named “Wahlburgers” — wrapped up its fourth season on A&E this September.

It was whal to whal Wahlbergs at the SoHo Metropolitan Hotel on Wellington St. Saturday, when brothers Paul and Donnie came to talk food, sports, their various TV shows and share the love with several charitable organizations they were hosting later in the evening.

The two famous brothers — there’s a whole whack of them spread across the continent, including uber-hunk actor Mark Wahlberg — also came to talk about the recent expansion of their Wahlburgers restaurant franchise to Toronto Pearson International Airport.

They have plans to open Wahlburgers in more than 100 locations.

“But, we take it one day at a time,” said Paul, a professional chef for more than 30 years. “Mark wants one everywhere — he wanted one on Mars after watching the movie, The Martian.”

What excites the two about Canada, Toronto in general?

“The food scene here is unbelievable!” says Donnie, of New Kids on the Block fame, who juggles his work on Blue Bloods, his band, his production work and his reality show with his wife, Jenny McCarthy. “Here at the SoHo there’s Susur Lee’s restaurant and the food there is unbelievable.”

“It’s a city where you can get any food you want, all authentic; the diversity is amazing, and that includes the staff,” added Paul. Which may explain why the brothers are in and out of the city on a regular basis.

“There’s always something new and exciting,” said Paul, adding the relationship with the suppliers of Canadian products used in the restaurant is “the best.” “We’re dealing with the finest. The foods we sourced are some of the best in the world. Toronto is the type of city that delivers all the right ingredients.”

Actor Mark Wahlberg says he is working with Detroit businessman Dan Gilbert to open a Wahlburgers restaurant location in the city’s downtown Greektown district.

“I’ve been nice enough to get Dan Gilbert to give me a nice location,” Mark Wahlberg said in the Fox 2 interview. “I’m coming. It could be this summer.” Wahlberg revealed the plans during an interview with WJBK Fox 2 to promote his new movie “Daddy’s Home.” Wahlburgers is a fast-growing burger chain started in Massachusetts in 2011 by brothers Mark, Donnie and Paul Wahlberg. It’s also the subject of a reality TV show on A&E.

Gilbert’s Bedrock Real Estate Services confirmed the news.

“As Mark Wahlberg stated, we are working very closely with Mark and Wahlburgers to create a great location for them in the Greektown area,” Dan Mullen, Bedrock’s executive vice president, said in a statement.

Representatives for the Wahlburgers company were not immediately available for comment.

The CEO of Wahlburgers recently told the media site Business Insider that his chain could add 100 to 150 new locations in the next five years. Its current locations outside of Massachusetts are New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Toronto.

Brothers Donnie, Paul, and Mark Wahlberg are planning a massive expansion for their burger chain, Wahlburgers.

The gourmet burger chain founded by the famous Wahlberg brothers is planning a rapid expansion.

The Boston-based chain, called Wahlburgers, is about to open its sixth location in Manhattan’s Times Square.

Over the next five years, the company plans to add 100 to 150 more locations, Wahlburgers CEO Rick Vanzura told Business Insider in an interview.

Wahlburgers is competing with other better-burger chains such as Shake Shack, Five Guys, and Smashburger.

But it has a unique advantage over those chains, and not just because of its celebrity founders: Wahlburgers is the subject of an Emmy-nominated reality TV show, which just got approved for two more 14-episode seasons on A&E.

The show, which stars brothers Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg, has been paramount to the brand’s success so far, Vanzura said.

“It has certainly been a huge promotional vehicle,” he said. “We saw an immediate increase in sales with the show. And Mark and Donnie understand the importance of the show to the brand so they have done everything they can to promote the show.”

Opening a restaurant might seem like an odd choice for Mark and Donnie Wahlberg, who are best known for their acting and singing. But the lesser-known Wahlberg brother – Paul – is a classically trained chef who has been in the restaurant industry for more than 30 years.

Wahlburgers currently has five locations in Boston, Toronto, and Coney Island, New York. The company has agreements for additional locations in Manhattan, Orlando, Philadelphia, Long Island, and D.C. It also has an agreement for 20 locations in the Middle East, with plans to eventually have 300 locations overseas.

The privately-held company doesn’t release many details about its financials. Vanzura says the original Wahlburgers location generates about $5 million in sales annually, but noted that he would not expect that volume for every restaurant going forward.

Reality bites into burger realty, as celeb Mark Wahlberg and brothers are coming to Midtown.

Wahlburgers, the Wahlbergs’ fast-growing Massachusetts-based burger chain, is coming to 725 Eighth Ave. between West 45th and 46th streets near Times Square.

Founded by Mark, his actor brother Donnie and executive chef Paul, the restaurant, bar and store will take up all five levels of the property.

Last summer Wahlburgers opened its first New York City restaurant at 3015 Stillwell Ave. in Coney Island in a property owned by Thor Equities.

Joseph Sitt’s Thor also owns the 8,300 square-foot Theater District property where the 10-year deal was signed this week. Asking rents for ground floors in this Eighth Avenue area run $400 per square foot.

Through Sunday, 100 percent of the chain’s profits on its Soutien (French for support) Burger, which comes heaped with French onion jam, Boursin cheese and fresh watercress, will be donated to the French Red Cross.

The restaurant and family are also the subject of an Emmy-nominated reality show on A&E, and it’s likely that some of Donnie’s “Blue Blood” TV episodes will be filmed in the next location. Mark’s new flick, “Daddy’s Home,” opens on Christmas Day.

Wahlburgers, the burger specialist founded by brothers Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg and the subject of an A&E reality show, will open this winter at the Piazza at Schmidt’s in Northern Liberties.

No specific opening date has been announced.

But in the meantime, a Wahlburgers food truck will serve a limited, changing menu outside the site, in the former Darling’s Diner at the Rialto at the Piazza (1033 N. Second St.), beginning Saturday, Oct. 31.

Among the items will be the one-third-pound Our Burger, Alma’s Favorite Chicken, Portobello Mushroom Cap, Tater Tots, and Aqua Hydrate. (See menu.)

The truck’s hours haven’t been set just yet, but probably will be tied to weekends.

Local developer Artie Giordano, who plans multiple locations around here for the Massachusetts-based restaurant, is soliciting ideas for a signature “Invincible Burger,” inspired by Mark Wahlberg’s 2006 movie Invincible, about Eagles great Vince Papale. A contest, starting Nov. 1 on Facebook, will ask fans to help choose the toppings for the special sandwich.

Wahlburgers will serve made-to-order beef burgers with assorted toppings, beef hot dogs, salads, fries, tots, and specialty frappes. A full bar will serve draft and bottled beers (including the Wahlbrewski, a Harpoon Brewery custom unfiltered pale ale), wines by the glass, cocktails, and adult frappes.

Wahlburgers nominally will replace PYT, which closed in early October pending a 2016 opening near the Fillmore as the Piazza’s burger restaurant-slash-bar.

Before the new Wahlburgers in Fenway officially opens its doors, the burger joint rolled out the red carpet for an invite-only, grand opening party on Thursday night.

Friends and family members joined owners Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg for the festivities, as eager fans snapped photos from behind a velvet rope.

Between an Emmy nominated reality series and new locations popping up in Boston and abroad, it’s clear that the Dorchester brothers are building something big with the Wahlburgers brand.

Nothing would make them happier than to see their joint venture turn into something that provides for their family generation after generation. However, they aren’t ready to get lost in dreams of dynasty building just yet, and are staying focused on keeping up the momentum at their various New England locations.

“It would be amazing to build a business that would last for generations, but most importantly, it’s important for us to start it right here in our own backyard,” Mark said. “Whether it be here in Fenway, in Hingham, in Lynnfield, coming up in Dorchester very soon, we want to start really in and around the New England area. We’ve got a lot of other businesses and franchisees out across the country and across different parts of the world, but our main focus right now is in New England.”

For Paul, the mastermind chef behind Wahlburgers, he is solely occupied with creating quality meals each and every time. There’s simply no room for talk of the future.

Boston has a plethora of hamburgers, a vast abundance that some might consider excessive. But our overwhelming bounty of beef did not stop the Wahlberg brothers from staking their claim in the city game.

Mark, Donnie, and Paul — Boston’s family men turned Hollywood’s darling burger bros — held an exclusive opening party Thursday night at their newest Wahlburgers spot in Fenway. They also walked the red carpet outside the soiree, and even Mark — ever the covert one — took a moment to media-mingle.

“I’m in training for a movie right now, so it’s the worst,” Wahlberg said. “It’s torture being here and not being able to eat. Obviously my favorite is the Thanksgiving Day burger. I’m smelling them now and it’s torture.”

Donnie, on the other hand, mentioned he was going to have “about 10 burgers.”

“This place is the sacred ground in the city,” he said. “To open a business here, and to have our name up on the sign here is just [an honor].”  []

Mark and Donnie Wahlberg are set to be in town Thursday for the opening of the new Wahlburgers near Fenway Park. There’s an invitation-only red carpet event for the new location, although, with rain predicted, who knows how weather might affect the party. Other guests will include chef Paul Wahlberg and Wahlberg matriarch Alma. We assume cameras will be there for the brothers’ TV show, “Wahlburgers.” Wahlburgers already has locations in Hingham, Lynnfield, Coney Island, and Toronto.

Wahlburgers Will Open Its First Boston Proper Location on October 1

For fans who love celebrity-owned burger restaurants and celebrity-studded reality shows about those burger restaurants, good news: The first Boston proper Wahlburgers, which will be in the Fenway neighborhood, will finally open on October 1, Boston Restaurant Talk reports.

The restaurant is giving people the chance to sign up to attend the restaurant’s opening…virtually. There will be a “VIP” live stream, and “attendees” will be entered to win autographed “Wahlgear,” burgers for a year, and other prizes.

Helmed by Wahlberg brothers Paul, Donnie, and Mark, the growing restaurant group began in Hingham in 2011 but had world domination on its mind early and already has locations opening or in the works in Florida, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Toronto, along with a 20-franchise deal in the Middle East. Locally, there’s a Lynnfield restaurant, the original Hingham one, and eventually one at Logan Airport. But first, there’s the Fenway location (132 Brookline Ave.), opening next week. (Plus, there’s the reality television series.)

Earlier this month, Eater NY critic Robert Sietsema checked in on the new Coney Island Wahlburgers and found that the best part of it was the “Boston-style milkshake known as a frappe.” It was “paradoxically thick and also foamy, intensely flavored with chocolate, and damn delicious.”
